Correction at 7:48: The protester says “They are not doing this for themselves, but for the future of Hong Kong.”
Hundreds of thousands of Hongkongers have taken to the streets to protest a controversial extradition bill that could send Hong Kong residents to mainland China to be tried in court. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, says the bill is meant to prevent Hong Kong from becoming a safe haven for fugitives. But its opponents fear that Hong Kong would be exposed to China’s flawed judicial system, which would lead to further erasure of the city’s judicial independence.
At first Lam was determined to move forward with the bill. But after a series of massive protests, she announced she would “indefinitely suspend” the bill. But protesters aren't accepting the suspension, and have started demanding its complete withdrawal. They've also begun calling for Lam’s resignation.
But this rise in tensions is about a lot more than a bill. To understand why this bill hits a nerve with Hongkongers, it's important to understand Hong Kong’s relationship with China - and exactly how the bill would tip the scales in China’s favor.

UPDATE: Protesters in Hong Kong forced their way into the legislature on July 1, taking over the building on the 22nd anniversary of the city-state’s handover from Britain to China. The occupation is likely a turning point in what have been relatively peaceful - and powerful - demonstrations. Read more:

@Keranie Wong well, violance doesn't bring anything good. Violance will be replied with violance. So don't cry when violance land on the protestors. If you hurt a cop, what would you expect the cop do. Besides I have seen the protestors behave like bully and thugs. by all means not all, but some. Which is enough to question the validity of these protest.

@David Ma There have been peaceful protests. Been there, done that. The government just doesn't care. Now they even want to install CCTV cameras in HK that would monitor our every move and even score us base on what we say in the media. Its ridiculous.

During those 99 years, they were technically members of the British empire. All the behavior and customs adapted by them. So even though they're from Chinese roots, they're more British deep down.

Why everybody want to demonize China?Who said the democracy is the only right way? Have you people ever lived in China? I do, and I trust China's legal system. People's Republic of China does have some shortcomings but which country does not? I have a pretty good life in China and I think I got enough freedom in my life. Chinese government is not the evil that you think.

I just don't think their protest is as rightful as they say. Cause I know that Hongkong people travel a lot to mainland. The visit count is 10 times of their 7 million population. So if they feel constrained or unsafe in mainland and do not trust their legal system, they should not go there. From my perspective, China has many extradition treaties with other countries, and Hongkong is basically a province of China. If sending a criminal to mainland is wrong and can not passed by this "province". Then it only proves one thing (TOO MUCH FREEDOM).The protester want to get more freedom, but instead, they proved that mainland gave them too much freedom.

The Chinese govenment give HK 50 years... to get used of China's rule, becoming more similar to other part of China, not opposite. my question is, even if HK now suceed, becoming more unique, what will you do in 2047? will you ready to change everything in one night?

@Chris Todorovski at that time, China leader even not think about catch up, they really want to learn from HK, and believe 50 years later, China will become more similar to HK. but situation changes fast, HK nolonger teacher but a trouble to the Chinese Gov. Even Deng Xiaoping didn't expect this.

the original purpose of the 50 years was to let china catch up to hong kong.

A place that was never democratic before 1997 is talking about going back to before 1997 and pursuing democracy. In a planet where everyone is chasing independence, there are people who want to go back to former colonies. Use your violence of Hongkong protestors, let the world see what you did. We are all happy you doing that way.

I know this has become a political issue however can’t help but wonder what is the feeling who’s parents of that pregnant lady that has been killed by the boyfriend. So the boyfriend has a jail free card because of this? Can someone explain to me?
Sassymestreet Prije 2 dana
I find it ridiculous how in this video, it uses “pro-democracy” vs “pro-China”. And also the border is between the mainland and Hong Kong, not “China and Hong Kong”. I respect the people’s right to peacefully protest. But what’s happening now in Hong Kong is violent. Many innocent police officers are getting hurt. The method the protesters are taking can’t be encouraged. After all, Hong Kong is a city of China. Not only by politics, but also getting economic and living support from the mainland. I have friends from Hong Kong, but I was also swore at by a Hongkongnese for being Chinese. Issues like these are far more complicated than what the protesters have got to say. Media has strong power and they know it. But the audience can sometimes be unaware of the media’s influence. Please make sure, at least, you get your geography right before you tell a sensitive story like this. Stop being manipulative.
